This Spring a new classic joins the PopUp Painting calendar! Lots of you have asked for a go at this fantastic piece over the years, and we’ve finally figured out a way to make an event out of it. Please give a round of applause as we welcome Mr Bean’s Whistler’s Mother painting (The Movie version) to our calendar!

Originally by artist James McNeill Whistler in 1871, this realist oil painting gained a lot of love following the release of the 1997 Bean movie.

We know you’re going to love creating this new piece at our sip and paint events. It doesn’t matter if you’re looking to adjust it for a self portrait, gift it to the Mr Bean lover in your life, or planning to hang it above your bed – this painting is going to be such a fun thing to do on an evening out!

Artist Spotlight: Sara Twomey https://popuppainting.com/artist-spotlight-sara-twomey/ Wed, 12 Feb 2025 12:57:23 +0000 https://popuppainting.com/?p=77129

Sara Twomey is an artist based in London. Sara graduated from the Kent Institute of Art & Design in 2000 and has extensive experience facilitating, teaching and curating. Her experience even includes a period (2003-2007) working with Damien Hirst!

Valentine’s is nearly upon us, and so our calendar is full of luscious golden designs thanks to Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’. Klimt’s ‘Golden Phase‘ was iconic and controversial – gold had traditionally been reserved for religious imagery. But Klimt isn’t the only artist to use gold. Today, we want to turn the spotlight on one of our team, Sara Twomey, who also uses lots of gold in her stunning creations.

Sara’s pieces are light-filled and stunning. When asked why she used gold so much, Sara said: “I love Gold because it makes me think of Sunshine and I try to capture this in an abstract way”. Her process includes the use of metallic paint, sand and gold foil, with paint and foil repeatedly applied until she builds up the surface “like a light catcher”, revealing many dimensions. Sara says she makes the painting “without any preconceived end [and that] they are an experiment with light. I like how the surface reveals structure that appears and disappears throughout the day”.

You can learn more about Sara Twomey’s work at SaraTwomey.com. Make sure to follow her on Instagram as well at @SaraTwomeyArt.

Sip and Paint in Kensington & Chelsea! https://popuppainting.com/sip-and-paint-in-kensington-chelsea/ Thu, 23 Jan 2025 18:35:32 +0000 https://popuppainting.com/?p=75986

Sip and paint in Kensington and Chelsea with PopUp Painting as we return to the fabulous The Britannia in Kensington.

The Britannia is a beautiful traditional pub, located just off Kensington High Street. They offer a wide range of food and drinks, and have been serving guests since 1834!

Pre-pandemic, The Britannia was one of our favourite partner venues in West London, and we are very excited to be making our return. If you’re looking for fun things to do in Kensington at a great venue then this is for you!

We will be popping up first on Tuesday 28 January (7:30PM) with Van Gogh’s Starry Night, and then again on Tuesday 25 February at the same time for a Pop Art evening inspired by the work of Jayne Evans. At these sip and paint events, you’ll be guided step by step by a practicing artist to create your own masterpiece. It’s a great activity to do with friends, on a date, or even as a way to meet new people! The best thing: no experience is needed to take part.

5 Great Valentine’s Day Date Ideas https://popuppainting.com/5-great-valentines-day-date-ideas/ Tue, 14 Jan 2025 11:18:34 +0000 https://popuppainting.com/?p=76147 Don’t panic but Valentine’s Day is exactly one month away! We know that coming up with Great Valentine’s Day date ideas can be a challenge – do you go with something original and quirky, or with a classic? Is dinner enough? Do you do a gift too?! Here are some of our Valentine’s Day date ideas (we may be a bit biased with some…)

1. A sip and paint date with PopUp Painting

Valentine’s is one of those great times of year where we get to get the decorations and the glitter out, and really lean into our theming with our sip and paint events! We have lots in the calendar this February, with Valentine’s events in Sheffield, Manchester, Cambridge, London, Bristol, Birmingham and Liverpool! Check out all of our Valentine’s events here. As ever our events are all about unleashing creativity, wine glass in one hand, paintbrush in the other, no experience needed!

2. Go to see Bridget Jones at the cinema

Hotly anticipated, Bridget Jones is finally back! Based on Helen Fielding’s masterpiece books, the iconic Bridget Jones is synonymous with the awkwardness of dating and relationships – perfect for Valentine’s!

3. A classic Valentine’s dinner

Valentine's Day Date Ideas - dinner: two people clinking glasses of red wine at the dinner table in a restaurant

Going for a lovely dinner might not be terribly original, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a great idea! Maybe it’s somewhere you’ve been before and loved, or maybe you’re looking to ‘wow’ with somewhere new. Check out our range of fab partner venues for some dining inspiration here.

4. Make plans for another day

Roses for Valentine's day. This bouquet is a mix of white and pink.

Not everybody can be off for Valentine’s evening, but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate love this February! Whether you’re working in hospitality or healthcare, we all deserve some romance. Who can resist a partner who gives you a card and some flowers (I’m a fan of Bloom & Wild, personally) and says “let’s do this on Sunday”? And for those of you with lots to juggle, give the gift of a PopUp Painting gift voucher to book on to a future event when you know what’s happening.

5. A walk down memory lane

Grab a hot chocolate and go for a stroll round the streets you first went out on! You’ll be amazed what memories might come back to you. You can always head out for dinner or something fun afterwards!
