How to have the most creative Christmas ever

As we reach the shortest days of the year, there’s nothing better than spending the evenings inside your home, gathered near the tree spending time with your family. Why not make this Christmas even more special by bringing some creativity into your home.

Here at PopUp Painting we’ve created a few ideas and tips to make this Christmas the most creative one ever (no matter your artistic ability!)

1. Make your own Christmas decorations.

There are so many simple but effective techniques to do this. One thing we love doing here at PopUp Painting is baking fruit in the oven at a low temperature to dry them out, then you can pierce them with a hole, thread some string through, then hang on the tree – simple! (and the baking process will also make your home smell incredible for a few days). Another decoration craft we love is purchasing clear baubles, and filling them up with sequins and or tinsel, these look fantastic as they reflect the fairy lights and bring a sparkle to your tree.

2. Create your own mulled wine spices.

This is a lot of fun and super easy to do. Cut yourself a square of muslin cloth and start filling up with festive spices! Try different combinations of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. Tie with a ribbon and pop in your mulled wine as you’re heating it up. These also make great gifts.

3. Make your own festive candle holders.

Recycle your old food jars and turn them into holders for tea light candles. You can do this very simply by using a black Sharpie and drawing festive designs on the jar. Even doing simple snowflakes designs will look great when the candle is lit and a pretty shadow of the shape is cast on the wall around the holder. If you’re feeling a bit more creative try drawing a silhouette of a Christmassy village, leave the windows clear of the buildings so you can see the light of the candle shine through.

4. Make a Christmas Eve Box.
This is a great gift idea for your partner, kids or evening yourself. Find yourself either a hamper or crate (which you can paint and decorate yourself). Then fill this with everything to make the perfect cosy Christmas Eve ever ; DVDs of your favourite films, woolly socks, scented candles, hot chocolate sachets and sweets. Maybe a cheeky bottle of red as well..
