George Shaw (b.1966) is a British painter who creates works that capture everyday scenes from suburban and urban Britain.
The artist started his career in the 1970’s, receiving a BA from Sheffield Polytechnic and his MA from the Royal College of Art. Early on in his career Shaw painted scenes from the suburban estate he grew up on, in a traditional, representational manner. What made Shaw’s work stand out, was not only his wonderful draughtsmanship, but also the fact that his paintings depicted bleak, mundane landscapes. The artist further subverted the traditional approach to painting by using Humbrol enamel paints, giving his work a distinctive gloss and a contemporary edge.
Shaw has continued to paint ‘the banal’ throughout his career, focusing on forgotten urban spaces. The artist’s pantings, however, are far from laborious to view; evoking feelings of nostalgia and hinting at the human condition.
The artist was shortlisted for the Turner prize in 2011and currently lives and works in Devon.
